I started my career in health care as a carer for elderly in a local residential home in 2002. I became interested in health for the rewarding nature that comes with helping people and how individual lead better lives when cared for. I worked as a health care assistant until I joined another organisation that that specialized in community care and home care, (2004). From that point on, I took various courses and managed to gain my NVQ 3 Health and Social Care (Adults) at Northbrook College. Even though I was studying most of the time I managed to engage with work in different settings. During vocational periods I worked with other agencies and I was also relief staff with another major local health care provider. Recently I have been working in Mental health hospitals/psychiatry medium to low secure Units for people with various mental health issues, personal disorders and learning disability. I have just completed and passed my degree in Health and Social Care.

Duties involved assistance with personal care, feeding, driving, planning activities and sometimes waiting in hospitals with service users during hospital admissions. I had an opportunity to work extensively with young adults with challenging behaviors,autism and mental health issues. I also worked with the elderly in (EMI) settings. Duties involved covering shifts, organizing the rota, planning meals, organizing activities and in-house light administration duties. This service is for treatment and assessment of people with acquired brain injuries and strokes.As a Rehabilitation support work, duties involve following a rehabilitation programme to facilitate the rehabilitation of patients. Each patient or service user has a unique rehab programme that has to be followed after it has been agreed by a team of clinicians, managers, psychologists and the family or representatives of the service users. Support workers should also observe and report any psychological and physiological changes noted in patients. Training involves understanding the functioning of the brain, Managing aggression and violence and safe guarding vulnerable adults.

I passed with a Third class Hons, the course comprised a total of 7 modules: Management of Health and Social Care (Level 3), Public health promotion (level 3), Working for Health (level 2), Mental Health (level 2),Care welfare and Community(Level 2), Understanding Health and Social care. The degree study explored care in the community, management of health processes and outcomes, diverse perspectives in mental health, public health promotion, reducing health inequalities and issues regarding power, control, funding of care, the legislation in health last but not least, the challenges of maintaining standards in the face of impending budgets cuts across the health sector affecting especially the care elderly and the disabled people in the UK.
