Ward Assistant
Chalkhill, CAMHS, Princess Royal Hospital
June 2016 - September 2016
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Princess Royal Hospital, Sussex (June – September 2016) I upheld a volunteer position as ward assistant at Chalkhill, a Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) clinic specialising in behavioural and mental health disorders. This volunteering position provided insight into the running of a CAMHS ward, knowledge of therapies, awareness of safeguarding vulnerable children and hands-on experience with patients with a range of disorders. The skills gained from fulfilling such a position include communication skills, developing and practicing unique strategies when interacting with patients with complex needs. Accommodating to the diverse needs of the patients, for example, helping patients at dinner time. Likewise, problem solving and decision making skills, having the ability to identify and diffuse stressful situations. Being able to make critical judgements and anticipate the possible consequences and reactions of patients. As well as learning leadership skills for example, running weekly community ward meetings with the patients and supervising summer activity programme.
Bolnore Villiage Primary School, SENCO team
July 2015 - July 2015
I have also gained experience from completing a placement at Bolnore Village Primary School, with the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) team. Engaging in a range of therapies including Mindfulness based therapies, Relaxation therapies, Art therapy, One-to-One therapies and nurture groups. Interacting with children with a variety of disorders, ranging from Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Pathological Demand Avoidance to those with referrals to the social system and victims of abuse. Whilst at this placement I liaised with the Special Needs Coordinators, performed and participated in Mindfulness and Relaxation interventions. I developed great patience skills and the communication and initiative skills necessary to cope with and meet the complex demands of these vulnerable children.
